The Oak Ridge International Folk Dancers meet throughout the year on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 - 10 PM at the Claxton Community Center near Oak Ridge and Knoxville, Tennessee. Paul Taylor and other folk dancers in the group teach dances early in the evening starting at 7:30 PM; then we do request dancing until 10 PM. We have pot luck suppers and workshops on a regular basis. Call to verify schedule changes during holidays.

History: The group was started over fifty years ago when the city of Oak Ridge, Tennessee was first developed during World War II. Our dancers come from Oak Ridge, Knoxville and nearby towns. We welcome visitors to the area, fanatics, beginners and every level in between.
We do dances from the following countries and more: Romania, Bulgaria, England, Scotland, France, Hungary, Sweden, Norway, Ukraine, China, Israel, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Russia, Mexico, Slovenia, Armenia, South Africa and Japan.

The Oak Ridge Folk Dancers have collected many interesting costumes and folk related items over their years of dancing - both in the USA and abroad.
They were on display at the Oak Ridge Library in January 2014.

Mountain Playshop in Swananoa, North Carolina,

Romanian folk dance instructors Sonia Dion and Cristian Florescu will teach this weekend workshop in Black Mountain, NC. The Playshop registrars will accept only 100 people. Early registration opens July 6th.

Autumn Leaves -The Nashville International Folk Dance group has invited Yves Moreau for their annual workshop in Bulgarian dance Nov. 7th-9th. Details available on their website.
Donka Koleva - Join us for an evening with Ms. Koleva of Bulgaria, her husband and a small band on Thursday, November 13th. at The Square Room in Knoxville. A Balkan singing lesson is tentatively planned for 6:30-7:30PM followed by a dance party. (There will be a charge for both - to be determined, but necessary to cover expenses.) Contact Claudia if you are interested in the singing. More info to come.
Some of us danced at Destination Imagination 5/22 at UT. There were over 4,000 students from 32 countries attending this 4-day creativity competition. We danced Black Forest (Taiwan), Katonti (Israel), and Cimpoi (Romania) with flashing lights and big screen video.
We had a fun evening Greek Dance Workshop on May 12th
featuring teacher Christian Papakostas at the Knoxville Greek Orthodox Church. Professor Papakostas taught lots of lively dances and gave a percussion demonstration.

Our April 25-27, 2014 Workshop was a great success. Ed Austin, artistic director of the Folk Dance Ensemble at Brigham Young University in Utah, taught a variety of dances including Serbian Gypsy, Romanian Gypsy, Israeli contemporary & traditional, Scottlish, English and Contra.
